I am going to repeat the same lecture, tangent, rant, that I have stated for the past 10 years after there is a mass tragedy. Every time there is a mass shooting, we hear the same arguments, from the same people, who have not been able to make this stop. We have to have a reason, an explanation, someone or something to blame – we have run out of scapegoats. Let’s review the reasons.
- Too Many Guns.
- Not Enough Guns (good guys with guns).
- Child Abuse.
- Taking Prayer out of Schools (moral decline).
- Playing an Ozzy Osborne record backwards (Satan worship)
- Violent Movies.
- Violent Song Lyrics.
- Violent Video Games.
- Mental Illness (universal default for all of society’s problems).
- Autism Spectrum Disorders (not to be confused with mental illness).
Now, we are blaming the parents. I am confused about this. If the parents did not plot with the shooter, help them plan their attack, drop them off, wait and take them home, how are they involved?
We live in a pro-gun country. It is not illegal to own a gun or keep a gun in your home. Have any parents been charged with vehicular manslaughter? DUIs? Assault? How many parents are implicated in drug crimes committed by their children?
I do not see value in any of the above theories. There is no Boogeyman.
The reason is that we allow this to continue. There are instructions on how to prevent this and they are free, open source, available to anyone who wants to learn. These resources are mentioned here and there after a mass tragedy but they do not get the same amount of airtime when people are looking for answers. The coverage goes to all of the same arguments that have produced zero solutions in at least 10 years.
